Gigger escapes into the wild:

http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/js.gigger.a@mm.html

Gigger, a new JavaScript-based virus, has escaped into the wild. It attempts to delete files from a computer and format user's "C" disk drive on restart and antivirus vendors are characterizing it as high-risk.

Gigger, which uses a combination of Microsoft Outlook and mIRC to spread, is not spreading widely, but its destructive potential has prompted Symantec to issue a strongly worded warning about the worm. http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/js.gigger.a@mm.html
The virus attempts to pass itself off as a security update from Microsoft but the software giant only makes updated software available on its Web site, and never by email.

Gigger usually arrives with the subject line "Outlook Express Update" and an infected attachment "mmsn_offline.htm".

Here are further details:
Distribution:
- Subject of email: Outlook Express Update
- Name of attachment: mmsn_offline.htm

Technical description:

JS.Gigger.A@mm arrives as an email message that has the following characteristics:

Subject: Outlook Express Update
Message: MSNSofware Co.
Attachement: Mmsn_offline.htm

If the worm is executed, it does the following:
Its author is believed to be Bulgarian. Antivirus vendors are updating their software to detect the virus and protection should be in place soon...until then - watch out.
